YOUR GUILD AT
WORK
Just take a
look around at your colleagues in the newsroom and you will quickly see
that the issue of pensions is a ripe one for discussion. That's why we're
presenting a basic course in Pension 101 at the local's quarterly
membership meeting on Wednesday, June 8, in our usual meeting place on the
first floor of the Steelworkers Building. The pension presentation will be
by members of the Guild's pension committee, Dave Peters, Len Barcousky
and Steve Karlinchak.
Members can
also find out about progress on negotiations at our Monessen unit, as
well as the state of legal affairs in our ongoing battle with Point Park
University over our right to bargain. There will also be information about
the year's social events, including the annual picnic, which will be at a
new location this year at Sunset Beach in Washington County. And there
will also be a major announcement regarding the fall membership meeting.
The meeting
will be held in two sessions as usual, at 12:30 and 5:30 p.m. Pizza and
pop for everyone.
See you there.

"Off the

Theater at 8 p.m. Sept. 29, will provide a hilarious evening of satire,
music and fun while benefiting the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank
and the Guild's scholarship fund. Anyone offering their talents for the
cast or backstage production needs should touch base with Chris Rawson;
anyone volunteering for writing and non-production needs such as publicity
and food should contact Gary Rotstein.
AND SPEAKING OF
SCHOLARSHIPS
Lauren L.
Hough of West Virginia University and Emily E. Leone of Duquesne
University are the 2005 recipients of Guild Scholarships of $1,500 each.
Jim Heinrich, chairman of the scholarship committee, presented them with
their checks on May 20. Others serving on the scholarship committee were
Guild members L.A. Johnson, Marianne Mizera, Rick Shrum and Andy Starnes.
Guild member Steve Urbanski is Emily's academic adviser at Duquesne
University.
WHAT'S NEW IN YOUNGSTOWN
In a walkout
that began at Thanksgiving, more than 150 Guild members continue to strike
against The Vindicator in Youngstown. Deb Shaulis Flora, vice president
of the local, reports minimal progress toward resolution of the many
issues on which labor and management are far apart. The Pittsburgh
Newspaper Guild has "adopted" one striker, John Goodwin, sending him $100
a month, and a grass-roots effort led by Jim Heinrich has adopted four
more strikers, Neva Yaist, Michelle Comanescu, Tom Howlett and James Cole.
Because of your incredible generosity, Jim manages to come up with the
$400 a month he needs.
Please
continue to give generously, and if you're not currently giving, please
ask Jim to add your name to his list.
THANKS, MIKE, AND CONGRATULATIONS
Mike Bucsko,
president of the Pittsburgh Newspaper Guild, received the Guild Service
Award -- the highest honor of the TNG-CWA sector Conference to a
thunderous standing ovation in Victoria, British Columbia, on May 7. Mike
was nominated for the award secretly by our local's executive committee,
and Ken Fisher wrote the nomination, which listed Mike's long list of
achievements and his unselfish service. In his acceptance speech, a
near-speechless Mike said, "I really feel uncomfortable accepting
something for doing something that needed to be done." But we Guild
members feel really comfortable thanking you, Mike. Congratulations! Read
